What a crackle map actually changes

Pops and bangs, crackle map, burble tune, overrun crackle, popcorn tune, deceleration crackle — every one of these names the same modification. On a stock calibration, lifting off the throttle triggers a clean overrun fuel cut: injection stops, and the exhaust goes quiet. A crackle map interrupts that. A small amount of fuel keeps going in on deceleration, and ignition timing is pulled back far enough that the mixture is still burning when the exhaust valve opens.

That late combustion in the manifold and downpipe is the noise. Ignition retard controls how far into the exhaust the burn travels, and the fuelling controls how much there is to burn — which is why the effect can be tuned from an occasional soft burble to a loud, continuous crackle rather than being a single on/off switch.

It is worth being clear that this is entirely an acoustic modification. It adds no power. A crackle map is ordered because of how the car sounds on the way down from a gear, not how quickly it gets up one.

What it costs the engine

Burning fuel in the exhaust puts heat where the exhaust system was not designed to have it. That is not an argument against the modification, but it is the honest description of it, and it is why intensity is a choice rather than a maximum setting.

Turbochargers, manifolds and catalysts sit in the path of that heat. A car with a catalyst still fitted is the case that deserves the most thought — a mild setting is a different proposition from a loud one on the same vehicle. Where a build is intended for track use, the harder settings make more sense than they do on a car that also does daily mileage.

Which cars it suits

The effect needs fuel and spark to play with, so it belongs to petrol engines. Turbocharged petrol cars generally give the most pronounced result because there is more exhaust volume and more system for the sound to develop in; naturally aspirated engines tend towards a sharper, drier crackle.

The exhaust makes as much difference as the map does. A car with a less restrictive system, or without a rear silencer, will be considerably louder on the same setting than a stock one — which is worth knowing before choosing an intensity.
